Varicose veins are superficial veins that
become dilated veins close to your skin's surface. The name varicose comes
from the Latin word varix , which means twisted. Any vein may become
varicose, but the most commonly affected areas are the legs and feet.
For many people, varicose veins and spider
veins are simply a cosmetic concern. Although they are not life
threatening, varicose veins can cause an aching pain and discomfort.
Sometimes the condition leads to more serious problems such as venous
eczema or venous ulcers.
Nearly one in three people will develop varicose veins at sometime in
their life. Although there is a perception that varicose veins are more
common in women recent studies have shown that the reverse is true.
However women are more likely to seek medical help compared to men.
Although
the exact cause of varicose veins is unknown, we do know that the walls of
the veins can expand and valves can be damaged. This damage can happen
when the blood is prevented from moving out of the legs as it should. |
