VNUS closure is a new technique which avoids
stripping and a groin wound. A catheter is passed up the vein from the
calf. It is carefully placed at the junction between the thigh vein and
the deeper veins. An ultrasound scan is used to place the catheter
precisely.
The catheter is opened to contact the vein
wall and an electrical current is passed through the vein wall over a
short distance (2mm). This causes the proteins in the vein wall to change
shape and contract down. The catheter is slowly pulled down through the
thigh vein to the level of the knee.
This leaves the vein contracted down and no
blood flows through it. It is effectively removed from the circulation
achieving the same outcome that stripping of the vein does in traditional
surgery. After this the varicose veins in the leg are removed using the
same technique as in normal surgery.
It
is felt by many that this is now the method of choice for the treatment of
varicose veins. |
