Any investigations need to be ordered by the
surgeon that examines you. The anatomy of the abnormal varicose veins
needs to be assessed and in so doing the surgeon may perform a number of
tests. In the Clinic the surgeons uses his hands and eyes to assess
the area of varicosities. The underlying cause of the varicose veins is
then found using a formal
ultrasound (Duplex) Scan.
A Duplex scan is an Outpatient investigation, taking approximately 20 - 30
minutes per leg, performed with a sophisticated ultrasound scanner,
capable of producing both visual images of veins and information on
direction of blood flow within them. Such a scan produces a detailed
"roadmap" of superficial and deep veins in the leg helps the surgeon to
direct the surgery specifically to the patients needs. This scan is
harmless and involves no needles or x-rays.
